Wellbeing
Wellbeing at Longwarry Primary School
Our wellbeing team was formed with the purpose of providing a happy, safe, supportive environment, which meets the needs of individual children throughout their primary school experience. It works towards forming a partnership between children, teachers and parents based on mutual respect. It clearly defines commonly agreed rules which protect our rights and remind us of our responsibilities.
Our commitment to the emotional wellbeing of our students includes the employment of our School Chaplain (Miss Lizzie ) and Student Wellbeing Officer (Miss Steph). Together they provide individual counselling and support for students. They also conduct preventative programs based on resilience, self-esteem and more.
The school implements a variety of structures and programs to promote student wellbeing such as:

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning (PB4L)
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) is an evidenced based framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe, supportive learning cultures.
When PB4L is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and learning. Students and staff benefit from:
- increased respectful and positive behaviour
- increased time focused on learning
- improved social-emotional wellbeing
- positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
- increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices
- a predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance
- improved student attendance
- decrease in suspensions
Teaching expected behaviours
Classroom staff teach the school’s behaviour expectation (be safe, be respectful, be resilient and be a learner) to our students in an age and context appropriate way during structured weekly lessons based on the school matrix and data.
Reinforcing expected behaviours
All staff verbally reinforce positive behaviours they provide students with tokens to acknowledge their behaviours. Students can X-Change their positive behaviour tokens for different acknowledgements. These could include free dress, computer time, outdoor game, sitting next to a friend, teachers’ helper, to name a few.
Managing minor challenging behaviours
Staff at Longwarry Primary School assist students to improve their behaviour by reminding students of the behaviour expectations and then reteaching the behaviour expectations as required during their interactions with students. Staff also provide appropriate behavioural choices and students with opportunities to re-engage with their learning if they have demonstrated a minor challenging behaviour. Following a minor challenging behaviour staff will conference with students and issue logical consequences for any minor behaviours.
